The following illustration shows how some illustrators use different shades of black to indicate night versus day instead of evil versus good as in the first example above:

WHILE SNAPE SEEMS SINISTER BECAUSE HE HAS BECOME A TOOL OF VOLDEMORT: DUMBLEDORE SEEMS BENIGN BECAUSE HE FIGHTS THE DARKNESS ALONGSIDE GOOD SUPPORTING FIGHTERS LIKE HARRY POTTER (ROWLING 2007).

Black and white illustrators can also use grayscale effects when illustrating objects, for example when depicting smoke from a fire without coloring it:
When we think of books with memorable characters, we often think of Harry Potter.

It is a seven-book series that follows the adventures of ten-year-old Harry Potter and his friends Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Ginny Weasley.

The books follow Harry as he learns to use his magical abilities for good.

The main characters of the series are represented in black and white illustrations by JK Rowling, who also wrote the books under the pseudonym "Joanne Kathleen Rowling".

This style of illustration emphasizes Harry's appearance over his thoughts or actions.

By contrasting light and dark colors, black and white illustrators use different artistic techniques to represent dark and light, respectively.

They also show how Harry feels about being a wizard in the face of Voldemort's evil while retaining his illusions that Hogwarts is a safe place to learn magic.
In black and white illustrations, different techniques can be used to represent dark versus light.

One technique uses deep blacks to suggest night or evil, while lighter blacks suggest day or goodness.

Simi-tone illustrations use dark and light colors together to create a more subtle effect than using only heavy or light colors.

By darkening an object and keeping its background the same color as other objects, illustrators imply that objects with darker colors are more powerful or important than lighter ones.

For example:

BLACK AND WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS EMPHASIZE CERTAIN ASPECTS OVER OTHERS DEPENDING ON WHICH ASPECTS

Black cats are traditionally thought to be more powerful than white cats because people have believed cats with black fur to be tabby since the Middle Ages, long before people knew what a cat with white fur looked like (Rowling 2007 ).

Similarly, in this illustration of Scabbers (a rat belonging to Sirius Black), Scabbers is much darker than Peter Pettigrew, making Scabbers appear much more powerful than Pettigrew (Rowling 2007).

IN THIS JIM KAY ILLUSTRATION, MERLIN APPEARS AT NIGHT DUE TO MERLIN'S OLD AGE, EMPHASIZING HIS AGE OVER HIS MAGICAL POWER COMPARED TO OTHER ELDERS.

witches/wizards like Morgana Pendragon (Kay 2008).

On the other hand, if Merlin were old enough to appear during the day, his age would be less noticeable compared to young witches like Hogwarts Headmistress Minerva McGonagall (Kay 2008).

Alternatively, if Merlin were young enough that he could appear during the night and day periods simultaneously, he would have essentially no limit to the number of times he could appear before disappearing again (Kay 2008).

Another technique used by black and white illustrators is to show how objects look at certain times, for example, what scenes are occurring at a certain time throughout a book chapter or series when characters appear at Hogwarts or in Diagon Alley without his friends.

or families? In this scene from chapter 15 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince where Ron misses Hermione for Christmas, Hermione's face shows her sadness at spending Christmas away from her best friend (Rowling 2007):
As Ron watches in pain from missing Hermione so much, something else besides Hermione catches his eye: the paraphernalia of Dumbledore's army found everywhere on the tables of Hogwarts Market (Rowling 2007).

A third technique used by black and white illustrators is to show contrasts between two similar objects, for example between Dumbledore himself and Snape when they fight each other later in Half-Blood Prince:

In all seven Harry Potter books, readers met an extraordinary young man named Harry Potter.

Harry was an orphan who grew up in penury with his cruel aunt and idolized his warm and loving parents.

After a series of traumatic events, he became known as the boy who would live until he knocked out Voldemort.

Throughout the series, Rowling proved that Harry's life was saved by blood sacrifice when he tried to kill himself by holding a poisoned chalice at King's Cross Station.

His character was strengthened by relationships with his parents and his loving friends as they valiantly tried to help him recover from self-inflicted wounds.

He also benefited from being educated at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which taught him valuable combat skills which he later used to defeat Voldemort once and for all.

During a pivotal scene in Book 7@ Chapter 24 of The Deathly Hollows@ Lily Evans-Potter sacrificed her own life so that her husband James could escape certain death at the hands of Lord Voldemort: “…he had plunged his knife deep into her heart….

After Lily Evans-Potter sacrificed herself so they could live, James dipped two fingers in Lily Evans-Potter's blood and wrote "Lulus" on a piece of parchment before giving it to Professor Dumbledore so that Harry could escape safely from them.

both during their final confrontation with Lord Voldemort at Hogwarts Castle.

Using this medium, Lily Evans-Potter allowed her dying husband access to some form of magic so that he could write down important information for Harry about where he would find reinforcements later in his battle against Voldemort:

Something that helped Harry through this difficulty was the strong relationship he had with his adoptive father James Potter and his mother Lily Evans-Potter.

His adoptive father believed in him no matter how bad or hopeless things seemed to be at any given time in his life.

As for Lily Evans-Potter, she constantly encouraged her son to seek inner strength rather than outside help when faced with difficult situations, such as when trolls invaded his school during class time or when Voldemort tried to kill them all during reception.

their wedding at Malfoy Manor.

He also taught his son that it takes courage, not weakness, to endure until victory over one's adversity comes naturally rather than being forced through bloodshed through blood sacrifice, as explained below:

According to Rowling's books, Harry Potter's life began very differently from the other children in his orphanage.

His parents died when he was still a baby, leaving him in an orphanage with no memory of his deceased relatives.

This left him yearning for some connection with other humans after being rejected by them as a child.

He also suffered from terrible physical ailments, including severe arthritis, dyslexia, club foot, and earwig removal, which led him to believe that no one would ever love him again except Professor Dumbledore.

However, if he had access to some form of magic like the other inhabitants of Hogwarts castle, this gloomy outlook would have been replaced with hope and self-belief.

Weasley is miione! The Weasleys are our family! They have myione! The Potters will always love you! They will always regret what they couldn't do for you! I'm failing too, but I know where I belong now! ...The Elder Wand...has always belonged...
